Historic Czech Republic Hockey Stadium Turns to HARMAN Professional Solutions for Modern Sound System

Upgraded audio system elevates hockey stadium sound performance with excellent coverage, speech clarity and control

KLADNO, Czech Republic–– A comprehensive HARMAN Professional Solutions sound system has been installed in ČEZ Stadium Kladno, one of the oldest ice hockey stadiums of its kind in the Czech Republic.  Originally opened in 1949 as an open air stadium, the ČEZ added a roof in 1959 and underwent an extensive reconstruction project in 2014. With an overall capacity of 5,200, the stadium’s two ice rinks have hosted many great Czech hockey players, world champions and Czech Olympic winners who trained at the stadium. Today, the stadium is home to local hockey club Rytíři Kladno and many aspiring figure skaters.

Struggling for many years with an outdated, unsatisfactory audio system, stadium management recently turned to local HARMAN Professional Solutions distributor AudioMaster CZ to orchestrate a comprehensive modernization. According to Project Manager Matej Sborovy, the goal of the upgrade was to put in a sound system that can be used for all of the stadium’s audio needs, including hockey matches, figure skating and training. Special attention was given to address the stadium’s size and shape, the low-but-wide seating platforms and the increased humidity inside the stadium.

“We designed the system around JBL SRX800 Series loudspeakers, including 16 SRX815, six SRX812 and four STX818 models,” said Sborovy. “The SRX800 Series offers an excellent price and performance ratio, great sound quality and high output. We really like these speakers, and we use them wherever we can. We keep finding new uses for them—they are very versatile. We also used an additional eight JBL AWC82 enclosures to cover the shorter sides of the seating platform.”

“For digital audio distribution, we decided to use BSS London BLU devices due to the excessive power loss on potential, long-run audio wiring,” said Sborovy. “The core of the system is a HARMAN HiQnet Audio Architect™ panel that provides users quick control over the entire system. The Signature 12 is a high-performance, 12-input, small-format analog mixer with onboard effects.”

“On the ice, we’re using AKG WMS470 vocal and sport wireless microphones for the presenters, timekeepers and judges,” said Sborovy. “In the control room, we have a pair of JBL LSR305 studio monitors. Because the control room is completely soundproof, we placed four AKG P170 condenser microphones in the stadium for picking up the atmosphere and ambient sound of the hall.”

The AKG by HARMAN P170 is a versatile, small-diaphragm condenser microphone that’s perfect for recording room ambience, percussion overheads, acoustic instruments and ensembles. Its lightweight 1/2-inch true condenser transducer diaphragm delivers outstanding clarity and transient response.

“The whole installation was possible to finish in a relatively short time of only five days. We managed to achieve amazing speech intelligibility and very high output strong enough to handle even the loudest hockey fans with ease along with perfect sound coverage,” said Sborovy.

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – HARMAN’s BSS Audio today announced the introduction of its Soundweb™ London BLU-DAN Dante to BLU link Bridge, which allows one or more BLU link devices to be integrated with a Dante network.

“The BLU-DAN is a simple, yet powerful device which allows Dante functionality to be added to our Soundweb London 100 Series processors and Crown DCi Network Series amplifiers,” said Iain Gregory, Senior Market Manager, Installed Sound, HARMAN Signal Processing. “Since those devices also feature BLU link, you only need one, affordable BLU-DAN per equipment location.”

The BLU-DAN connects a Dante device to one or more BLU link devices via standard Cat 5e cabling. It is capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving up to 64 channels of Dante audio (64 x 64). Primary and secondary ports are provided to ensure fault tolerance and control is provided through a separate Ethernet port. The BLU-DAN’s BLU link connectivity is a low-latency, fault-tolerant digital audio bus with 256 channels.

The BLU-DAN is configurable using HARMAN’s HiQnet Audio Architect™ software. A wide selection of logic objects and a drag-and-drop user interface facilitate system setup. Its bi-directional locate functionality allows devices to be identified both from and within HiQnet Audio Architect.

BSS Audio Introduces BLU-103 Teleconferencing Signal Processor with VoIP

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – HARMAN’s BSS Audio today announced the introduction of its Soundweb™ London BLU-103 teleconferencing signal processor with VoIP (Voice over IP). The BLU-103 offers extensive signal routing and processing capabilities, including eight analog inputs and eight analog outputs, a Voice over IP (VoIP) interface, AEC (Automatic Echo Cancellation), BLU link, Ethernet connectivity, and many additional advanced features. The BLU-103 interfaces directly with digital phone systems and can facilitate two simultaneous VoIP calls.

The BLU-103 features extensive signal processing capabilities that maximize voice intelligibility. It provides AEC processing with Automatic Gain Control (AGC) and noise cancellation for up to eight independent AEC algorithms. AEC is used to eliminate the echo that can be heard when someone’s voice comes out of a speaker, is picked up by a microphone and is fed back into the system. AEC can be applied to signals coming from the local analog inputs or from the BLU link. Eight individual AEC references allow the user to apply AEC for multiple conferencing spaces using a single BLU-103.

The Automatic Gain Control ensures that microphone levels are optimum and the Noise Cancellation removes unwanted steady-state noise such as fan or air conditioning noise from the signal path. The analog inputs each have software-configurable gain in 6dB steps up to +48dB per channel as well as selectable phantom power.

BLU link, a low-latency, fault-tolerant digital audio bus, uses standard Cat 5e cable and can accommodate more than 300 feet of cable distance between compatible devices. If desired, fiber optic converters can be used to increase the distance to approximately 20 miles. The BLU-103 is compatible with the entire BSS Audio Soundweb London product line and can be operated using HARMAN’s HiQnet Audio Architect™ system design and configuration software.

12 Control inputs and six Logic outputs allow the BLU-103 to be integrated with GPIO (General-Purpose Input/Output)-compatible devices. Among its additional features, the BLU-103’s front-panel LED indicators provide signal present, clip and phantom power information without the need to connect a computer, and its bi-directional locate functionality allows devices to be identified both from and within HiQnet Audio Architect.

HARMAN Professional Powers Italian Digital Audio Training Session At Acoustic Light

PERUGIA, Italy – The main audio integrator within its local region in Italy, Acoustic Light recently completed a successful acoustic training session featuring new audio products from HARMAN Professional. By using Soundcraft consoles, JBL loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers, AKG microphones, Lexicon digital effects processors and BSS signal processors, Acoustic Light showcased the latest digital audio technology for a variety of applications.

Participants at the event included sound engineers, musicians, and other audio service providers. For the training session, Acoustic Light used a Soundcraft Vi3000 console with a Stagebox, a Soundcraft Si Expression 3 console with a Compact Stagebox and a Soundcraft MH3 console (48 channels) with an analog Stagebox.

“The Soundcraft consoles were invaluable in improving the participants’ understanding of the various audio products in the signal chain,” said Stephan Luthi, owner of Acoustic Light. Everyone obviously loved the Vi3000 and wanted to take it home, but the Si Expression also has a nice learning curve due to its simple layout. Since most people at the event were accustomed to analog consoles, being able to compare the MH3 with the digital consoles side by side definitely opened up a new world for them.”

Also featured were JBL PRX715 and SRX700 loudspeakers, Crown I-Tech 4000 amplifiers, AKG C 414 LTD and C 451 B microphones, Lexicon PCM81 and PCM91 digital effects processors, and BSS AR-133 and FCS-960 signal processors. These products allowed Luthi to explain the basic concept of audio design to the musicians while showcasing advanced features for the engineers.

“We chose these products to show participants how to properly tweak the system and position the microphones in a way that will enhance the intended sound, rather than inhibit it,” said Luthi. “Overall, everyone was impressed by the quality of the products offered in their price range.”

BSS Audio Provides Networking for Italy’s MiCo – Milano Congressi Convention Center

MILAN, Italy — Fiera Milano SpA is the most important trade show organizer in Italy and its MiCo- Milano Congressi convention center is the largest in Europe, with a capacity for 18,000 attendees and 70 different conference rooms. Located in the heart of Milan, the center has a variety of exhibition spaces and its conference rooms feature a complete range of audio and video connectivity including a comprehensive audio upgrade featuring a HARMAN BSS Audio Soundweb™ London networking solution.

The installation, located in the Northern wing of MiCo, was designed and built by Volume Srl, Euphon S.p.A. Group with support from HARMAN Professional Italian distributor Leading Technologies. The installation interfaces with the existing BSS Audio network that Leading Technologies provided for the South Block section of the facility.

The backbone of the system is provided by BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-806 signal processors, which offer configurable I/O, signal processing, Audinate’s Dante™ audio transport and Harman’s BLU link digital audio bus. Thirty-seven BLU-806 devices are installed in 18 rooms (along with an audio mixer), with each room’s EQ correction programmed into the BLU-806 devices. The BLU-806 was specified because it is the only Dante-supporting DSP device that could handle the required amount of signal routing and processing and enable a dual-redundant Dante network to run throughout MiCo North.

The system utilizes HARMAN HiQnet Audio Architect™ software, which provides comprehensive configuration, control and monitoring of the system.

According to Leading Technologies engineer Roberto Frigerio, the size of the project was matched by its urgency. “In the spring, the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union decided to bring various international meetings to MiCo. The organization also wanted to test the waters regarding staging other international corporate events beginning in 2015. Despite our successful installation in the South Block two years earlier, we had to prove we could accommodate these new demands and seamlessly integrate the new installation with the existing one – and under severe time and budgetary constraints.”

In addition to providing audio and video connectivity throughout the convention center, a major requirement was to standardize operation of the system in any room and accommodate a number of diverse A/V sources. “The BSS Audio Soundweb London system takes in the audio inputs from the mixing consoles via Dante and feeds the amplifiers through BLU link,” explained Volume’s project manager Marco Salviati. Users now also have the ability to send A/V from one room to all the others, enabling multiple rooms to share the same content, yet have individual volume levels.

109 JBL Control® 28 loudspeakers deliver audio throughout MiCo’s rooms. The speakers are powered by nine Crown DriveCore™ Install 4I300N amplifiers. In addition, a pair of JBL LSR305 powered studio monitors are used to provide a sonic reference in the master control room.

“For such a complex and flexible installation, it’s really simple to operate,” noted Dick Cranbe, the Audinate consultant on the project. “Every room can be run completely independently, and where rooms are linked together a user can use a single audio mixer to control the volume of all the rooms.”

“The project has lived up to its expectations, which were extremely high,” concluded Frigerio. “Until now, there was no facility in Italy capable of hosting large international meetings, which meant that we lost business to other countries. With the advent of the new BSS Audio system, MiCo is truly in the forefront of the world’s convention centers, and we’ve brought a new level of professionalism and new job opportunities into our domestic market.”

Paragon 360 Completes Total Audio Overhaul at Enid, Oklahoma’s Emmanuel Baptist Church With HARMAN’s Crown Amplifiers, BSS Audio Processing and JBL Loudspeakers

ENID, Oklahoma – Since its founding in the early 1980s, Emmanuel Baptist Church has grown into a strong congregation that hosts three worship services on Sundays alone and activities that serve a broad range of adults, youth, students and other groups in the community. The church was overdue for an A/V/L system renovation and turned to Springfield, Missouri integrator, Paragon 360 for an upgraded audio system featuring HARMAN’s Crown, BSS Audio and JBL components to meet the needs of its contemporary worship environment.

“This project was a full renovation with a major architectural redesign of the entire worship center.  It involved new audio, acoustics, lighting, staging and video systems as well as new scenic elements custom designed for the church,” said Mark Coble, Audio/Acoustics Design and Commissioning specialist at Paragon 360.  For this project, Coble and his design/build team needed to satisfy the requirements of three distinct groups: those attending traditional services with a choir; a more blended worship experience with praise singers and a band; and a modern, contemporary worship service.

Coble also noted that Emmanuel Baptist Church’s pastor likes to deliver passionate sermons and wanted to get his voice down to a whisper and still be heard by all the church’s congregants. “Before the update, he felt like he had to yell at times to get everyone to hear him.”  In addition, Coble noted that the system had to be more than just a “house PA” – it needed to have the capabilities of a concert sound rig. “The church hosts touring artists and didn’t want to have to deal with them bringing in their own gear. They needed a system that would have a large input count and deliver the high SPL that is often required for these performances.”

Before undertaking the project, church officials had asked Coble specifically about JBL and Crown based on their previous positive experiences in other venues. “We of course were well familiar with the capabilities of HARMAN gear and have had a lot of success with it. Since this had to be a really dynamic PA, I knew that JBL VERTEC® line arrays and Crown amps would be the perfect fit for this application.”

Paragon 360 deployed eight VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements and a VT4883 dual-12-inch subcompact arrayable subwoofer in three main flown clusters each at the left, center and right of the auditorium. Two JBL STX828S subwoofers were placed in custom subwoofer enclosures located in the face of the stage and four AC28/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers serve as overhead monitors for the choir. Nine AC25 ultra-compact loudspeakers deliver under-balcony fill and four STX812M 12-inch stage monitors cover the pulpit/stage area.

Seven Crown I-Tech 12000HD amplifiers power the main line arrays and subwoofers. Two Crown DCi Series 4|600 amplifiers drive the under-balcony and monitor loudspeakers, with a DCi 2|600 amp handling the choir monitors. The amps and speakers are networked using a BSS BLU-160 Soundweb London Signal Processor with BLU link in conjunction with a BLU-BOB break-out box output expander.

“Once we knew that we were going with JBL VERTEC, the Crown I-Tech HD amps were a natural fit,” Coble stated. “We knew they would deliver the kind of horsepower the installation required and we wanted to take advantage of the amps’ built-in VERTEC factory presets to optimize the system.”

In addition to the new audio system, Coble and his crew also did a significant amount of work adding the necessary acoustical treatments to optimize the sound of the sanctuary.

“The rig sounds great and everyone is really happy with the performance,” Coble concluded. “We truly realized our goal of transforming the space for a new generation of churchgoers.”
